Cooking with Less Salt

If you are trying to decrease the salt in your diet there is no reason to settle for bland food. Try replacing half of the salt in your cooking with a 50/50 mixture of salt and herbs or spices. Salt with garlic powder or onion powder is an excellent option for savoury dishes. For fish, salt with lemon zest works well. In spicy dishes, try salt with cumin or chilli powder. Experiment with new combinations using your favourite flavours to create fine catering.

While this mixture will complement most foods, to keep a shaker of regular salt in your cupboard, away from easy reach, for special-occasion use. There are some dishes, such as baked goods, where salt is required for leavening and substitutions will not produce favourable results. You can often use 7/8 of a teaspoon of salt for each teaspoon required in the recipe, without affecting the outcome.
